Beach Clean-ups Edinburgh

Making Digital organise a series of beach clean-ups along the Edinburgh coastline under an initiative called Sea-Thru Plastic.

Make a Difference

Sea Thru Plastic is the hands-on side of Making Digital. We organise clean-ups of Edinburgh’s beaches and waterways, and we invite teams to join us. If your organisation is looking to do their bit, join one of our volunteer away days and help us remove plastic waste which continues to pollute our seas.

Digital work uses energy and resources. I don’t claim a clean-up cancels that out. I do commit to measurable action and to reporting it honestly.

The task is menial, but the impact could be profound.

According to Marine Scotland, beach clean-up efforts are estimated to remove up to 20% of the 500,000 pieces of plastic (2.5 tonnes) which are discarded on Scottish east coast beaches at any one time.

The Scottish Government has failed with initiatives to restrict single-use plastic, penalise those littering in public spaces, and to create a sustainable circular economy which isn’t tainted by green washing.

It is often left to entrepreneurs or university-spin outs to turn the tide on tackling plastic pollution in our seas.

Our volunteers are (literally) picking-up where the government, and society, have neglected their responsibility to recycle waste effectively.

We are determined to prevent plastic erosion in our seas which pose a serious threat to marine life and even human health.
